- Law degree (L.L.B., J.D. or equivalent) from a leading university and/or law school.
- Admitted to practice law in Australia or New Zealand.
- 2+ years of post-admission legal experience at a top national or international law firm, in-house, or government agency, preferably with experience in emerging technology matters (e.g. Intellectual Property, AI/ML, etc.).
- Experience drafting and negotiating complex contracts.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects at once, follow through, and meet deadlines.
Amazon's Legal Department is looking for a talented junior lawyer to support Amazon Web Services (AWS). AWS is at the forefront of the cloud computing and service industry providing IT infrastructure services such as on-demand compute capacity, storage, content delivery, database services, browsers and more. As part of the AWS public sector legal team, the successful candidate will support AWS’s public sector customers, including government, state owned enterprises, NGOs, healthcare, and educational institutions, in Australia, New Zealand, and around the broader Asia-Pacific region.
This Associate Legal Counsel will negotiate and advise on a wide range of technology contracts with a focus on Australian and New Zealand public sector customers, assist with responses to bid proposals/tenders, support compliance training and awareness, and work proactively with regulators and policy makers. They will provide ongoing legal counsel and contract interpretation to business team members on a day-to-day basis, and help develop, implement, and manage process improvements across the team. Typical transactions will range from standard contracts to complex, high-dollar-value agreements.
The successful candidate will be inquisitive, enthusiastic about technology, enjoy working hard and being continually challenged, have sound written and oral communication skills, and demonstrate good judgment even in ambiguous situations. Compensation will be based on experience and includes equity compensation.
This position will be based in Sydney. Travel, including international travel, will be required.
- Complex contracting experience involving public sector customers (including government, state owned enterprises, NGOs, healthcare, and educational institutions).
- In-house government or tech experience is a plus.
- Sound written and oral communication, and client interaction skills.
- Experience in public sector procurement and knowledge of Australian or New Zealand government procurement rules.
- Knowledge of Commonwealth security regulations (e.g. the Protective Security Policy Framework and Information Security Manual).
- An existing Commonwealth security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
